What would you call someone who would give you the shirt off his back, even if it was a favorite shirt, just because ? I call it beyond generous... In my case, Mr. Win gave me the handles off the front door to his house. After traveling by horse-cart to the ancient ruins of Ava, in Mandalay, I told him I wanted to find a pair of old rustic handles for my new meditation garden in California. He took me to many antique shops in the late afternoon and we found nothing.
Mr. Win then made a long call on his cell phone. On the drive back to my hotel, he asked if we could stop at his home, where he lived with his sister and parents. “It would only take a minute, he insisted.” His sister greeted me with 2 rosewood hand-carved handles fresh off their front door. Mr. Win, beaming brightly, refused any money for the handles. “Please send me a photo when they are on your meditation gates”, he requested as the one thing he asked for in return. Moments after receiving his gift, I took the photograph of him in his modest home. A home now without front door handles.
In the case of Mr. Win, his gift goes beyond generosity and inspires me everyday as I open my meditation gates.
